Personal Emergency Response System (PERS)

Coverage for PERS for Maine Care members is provided through either the Home and Community Based Waiver for Elders and Adults with Disabilities or through the Home and Community Based Services for the Physically Disabled.

For Members enrolled in the Home and Community Based (HCB) Waiver for Elders and Adults with Disabilities, PERS are limited to those members who live alone, or who are alone for significant parts of the day, and have no regular caretaker for extended periods of time, and who would otherwise require extensive routine supervision. PERS can serve as a contingency plan to assure access to emergency assistance. Reimbursement is limited to the installation fee and the monthly phone charge for the emergency response system and the home unit communicator.

For Members enrolled in the Home and Community Based (HCB) Services for the Physically Disabled, the following guidelines apply.

Under the HCB for the Physically Disabled Waiver, coverage of the PERS is limited to the monthly phone charge for the emergency response system and the home unit communicator for consumers residing in areas where this system is available.
