If you are receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) based on disability and you have an interest in working, you are eligible for VR services.
When applying for AT devices and/ or AT services from Vocational Rehabilitation, it is critically important to remember that these devices and services are only provided when they are directly related to attaining or retaining a job.
As long as the individual is an "active" client, repair, replacement, or maintenance is likely. After the individual's case is "closed," consideration may be given to repair or replacement depending on the individual situation.
For the Vocational Rehabilitation program, training means vocational/ academic training or the development of independent living skills. Mental/physical restoration services are considered therapy.
Any funding decision reflects the results of a "holistic" evaluation of the individual needs, abilities and goals.
Vocational Rehabilitation is an eligibility program, not an entitlement program. Waiting lists, discontinuation of services due to lack of resources and order of selection criteria are all common strategies used to allocate scarce resources.
An Individual Plan for Employment (IPE) is developed on each person. All purchases of AT are considered on an individual basis and are considered only as it relates to employability. If the device and/or service is to be purchased then it must appear in the IPE.
If a person with a disability is eligible for any other programs or services that might pay for some of the required services identified in the IPE, these funds must be used in whole or part to meet the costs of vocational rehabilitation services. Exceptions to the comparable benefits and services are: independent living evaluation, counseling and guidance, vocational training services, rehabilitation technology (also known as assistive technology), rehabilitation engineering, placement, and post-employment services.
No income limitations.
The Client Assistance Program is available for appeals. For more specific information on the Vocational Rehabilitation appeals process, contact C. A. R. E. S., Inc./Client Assistance Program, 800 773-7055 (Voice/ TTY); 207 622-7055 (Voice).
