The Maine Department of Education's Maine CITE Program is the statewide organization designed to help make assistive and universally designed technology more available to Maine children and adults who need them.

Administered by the Maine CITE Coordinating Center, the Program is funded by the Rehabilitation Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Education and delivered through a partnership of private and public organizations that provide assistive technology demonstrations, equipment loans, alternative financing and public awareness.

Mission

  • Partnerships - Providing AT services and devices: Develops partnership and supports organizations that provide direct assistive technology services, devices and accessible instructional materials.

  • Alternative Financing - Affordable loan program: Works with financial lenders such as the mPower Loan Fund for more affordable loans to purchase assistive technology, adapt vans and do home modification.

  • Recycles Devices - Accessible and global connection: Provides a website - getATstuff.com - the Assistive Technology Exchange in New England that gives new life to used assistive technology and adaptive equipment.

  • Training and Workshops - Expertise on what is available: Provides training, workshops and demonstrations on assistive technology. Promotes conferences and seminars on innovative technology and universal design.

  • Policy Research and Program Development: Promotes ways for Maine people to acquire the technology and accessible instructional materials they need or want.

  • News and Information - Spreading the word to Maine citizens: Publishes and disseminates information about assistive technology products and services and universal design.

  • National Connections - Organizations and agencies: Provides connections to national organizations, resources and policy issues. Provides linkages through our website mainecite.org

Action

Maine CITE is committed to helping our citizens with disabilities improve their lives through:

  • Education: by participating in any type of school program
  • Community Living: by carrying out daily activities, participating in the community or living on their own
  • Employment: by finding or keeping a job, getting a better job, participating in a work training program or vocational rehabilitation
  • Information Technology/telecommunications: by using computers, software, web sites, telephones, office equipment and media

Goals:

  • Broaden understanding and promote wider availability of assistive and universally-designed technology.
  • Educate people with disabilities, their families, and the general public to know how to get and use assistive and universally-designed technology.
  • Facilitating the role of people with disabilities in helping to shape public policy that promotes assistive and universally-designed technology.
  • Ensure that Maine is a place where all people with disabilities have ready access to the technology they need to live fully and independently.
