The New England Consortium of Deafblind Projects presents
The Deafblind Leadership Program
Addressing the needs of individuals with deafblindness (Birth - 21 yrs)
Deafblindness is a unique disability requiring that team members have knowledge and skills about the impact of combined sensory loss on learning. The Deafblind Advisor Training Project will provide participants preliminary knowledge and skills in key competencies in deafblind education. Training will highlight effective practices related to functional implications of combined vision and hearing loss, language/communication development, assessment and intervention strategies, and characteristics of effective educational teams for children who are deafblind or who have multiple disabilities and sensory loss.
The key goals of this training project are:
- To increase the number of personnel with knowledge and skills regarding effective practices and strategies for children who have combined vision and hearing loss.
- To increase awareness of educational teams and state agencies regarding the unique and complex needs of learners who are deafblind and the need for specialized supports.
- To build and support both instate and regional "communities of practice" related to deafblindness and the use of effective practices.
What is a Deafblind Advisor?
Deafblind Advisors are educators and related services personnel who commit to train, support, and consult to educational teams on matters of instruction, assessment and program development. They recognize the unique needs of learners who are deafblind and the need for specialized supports. Also, Deafblind Advisors acknowledge the need for their own continuing education in the fields of deafblindness, sensory loss and multiple disabilities.
Project Requirements:
Deafblind Advisors must commit to the year and a half training project by attending three, 2-day training modules at Perkins School for the Blind, interim webinars /video conferences, and complete a final portfolio. Participants must have approval from their supervisor. The preliminary Training Schedule is attached here as a MS-Word document (plug-in required) and may be downloaded and printed out.
Deafblind Advisors will submit data regarding:
1) Pre and post self-ratings
2) Vision, hearing, classroom and environmental assessment
1) Family interview and needs assessment
All Deafblind Advisors are required to have direct access to a child who has combined vision and hearing loss for direct observations, assessment and program development.
The New England Consortium of Deafblind Programs (NEC) is in the process of pursuing graduate credit opportunities. At least forty-eight Professional Development Points will be offered following completion of all training requirements. Continuing Education Units will be offered in Connecticut only.
