OVERVIEW: Learn the ins and outs of the new iPad operating system (iOS 5.0) such as how to use all the accessibility features, new gestures, how to organize apps, how to find and make informed decisions on apps; Bluetooth switches, keyboards, speakers, mounts and iPad protectors; three new ways to make and mount an iPad; how to present and teach with an iPad; how to document student performance; assessment tools for the iPad; changing iPad settings; returning iPad apps that you don't want and much more.

STRAND: Education/Learning - Birth-21 includes Severe Multiple Disabilities.

AUDIENCE: OT, SLPs, Teachers, consumers, and AT specialists.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: As a result of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss, describe and identify ten features of the iPad that can benefit individuals who experience a variety of disabilities.
  • Discuss, describe and identify six new accessories for the iPad to accommodate for specific disabilities.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Dr. Therese Willkomm is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy and the Director of New Hampshire’s State Assistive Technology Program with the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire. She holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Technology from the University of Pittsburgh and has over 25 years experience in providing/managing assistive technology services. She is known nationally and internationally as “The McGyver of Assistive Technology” and also the “App Guru.”  Dr. Willkomm has presented in 38 states, five foreign counties, and three U.S. Territories and authored 22 publications including her most recent book titled Make A Difference Today - Assistive Technology Solutions in Minutes.

Deploying iPads and iTouches to Support Students in Special Education

OVERVIEW: This webinar will discuss the process of deploying iPads and iPod Touches district wide to support students eligible for special education. Funding, logistics, and in-depth details of the deployment will be covered. Case Studies will be used to outline the process and the academic successes of students. Apps utilized will be demonstrated and student work will be shown. Key successes will be highlighted, as will areas of the deployment needing improvement. Take home points and conclusions from the deployment will be examined.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Chris CichoskiKelly has been working with Assistive Technology for the past seven years. For the past two years he has been the Assistive Technology Integration Specialist for the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union (CCSU) in Essex Junction, Vermont where he supports special education teachers and the students who receive special education services in utilizing assistive technology. In 2010, Chris began implementing iPads and iTouches with students receiving special education services in 6 schools throughout CCSU.

Erin Maguire, M.Ed. is the Executive Director of Student Support Services for a school district in Essex Junction, Vermont. She is an endorsed special education director, secondary science teacher, principal and special educator. Her experience in special education spans 13 years and student ages 3-21. Technology is not only a professional interest but a personal past time. She has lead systems change on multiple topics including AT across multiple school districts.
